Jean Souviron
(Collegium Helveticum, Zurich)

Jean Souviron is an architect (ENSA Paris-Est) and civil engineer (ENPC) with a PhD in architecture from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. His research focuses on 20th-century building techniques and their relationship with indoor climates and the environment. He analyses the architectural, social and ecological impact of the implementation of industrial policies and energy regulations, combining history of architecture and technology, engineering sciences and environmental humanities.

Following his dissertation on the socio-ecological trajectory of the insulating glass unit, Jean now focuses on insulating materials as an Early-Career Fellow at the Collegium Helveticum, Zurich. His project Sealed Climates: Mapping the Ecological Impact of the Western European Thermal Modernity aims to better understand how these materials have transformed architectural design and impacted ecosystems throughout the 20th century.

From September 2025, as Associate Professor, Jean will lead the Architecture of the Planetary Boundaries postgraduate programme, which will be launched at the ENSA Paris-Est.

We have invited Jean on the basis of his work on Energies légères, an exhibition at Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris (2023-2024). By representing models and prototypes, Énergies légères presented an exploration of tomorrows, borrowing from sobriety, freed from fossil fuels and liberated from non-renewable materials.

Johan Albrecht is professor economie aan de Universiteit Gent en stichtend lid van de denktank Itinera Institute. In zijn onderzoek staan de dynamiek van systemen en markten centraal, met een focus op energiesystemen en de rol van preventie in een toekomstbestendig gezondheidszorgsysteem. Hij is auteur van elf Nederlandstalige boeken en meer dan 50 publicaties in internationale tijdschriften en verzamelwerken. In 2024 verscheen zijn meest recente boek ‘Een zorg minder. Hoe we de geestelijke gezondheid van jongeren kunnen versterken’. Zijn meest recente energieboek ‘Klimaatneutraal in 2050? Hoe organisaties het verschil kunnen maken’ werd in 2022 gepubliceerd. Johan Albrecht werkt frequent als adviseur voor Belgische en internationale organisaties. Momenteel is Johan Albrecht gecoöpteerd lid van de Centrale Raad voor het Bedrijfsleven, het Klimaatpanel van de Vlaamse Regering en de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO).

We vatten onze avondlezingenreeks aan met Johan Albrecht, omdat hij ons onmiddellijk zal kunnen wijzen op de ‘wickedness’ van het energieprobleem. Zijn onderzoek verknoopt sociale uitdagingen met gezondheidsuitdagingen, betaalbaarheid, marktdynamieken en klimaatverandering.

City Mine(d) (°1997) is een stedelijke designstudio die experimenteerruimte creëert voor de vragen van de toekomst. Ze maken complexe stedelijke systemen – zoals economie, energie, water en logistiek – tastbaar en begrijpelijk door ze te benaderen vanuit het dagelijks leven in de stad.

Ze geloven dat stadsontwikkeling een zaak is van iedereen. Daarom brengen ze eindgebruikers (ook wel “burgers” genoemd – of gewoon “jij”) samen met de professionals en experts die deze systemen vormgeven. Door deze ontmoeting ontstaan gedeelde inzichten die de basis vormen voor collectieve trajecten in diverse en dense stadsbuurten. Hun trajecten zetten bestaande regels en machtsverhoudingen even op pauze, zodat ze ruimte maken voor nieuwe manieren van maken, gebruiken en organiseren. Dit leidt tot concrete, innovatieve oplossingen die niet alleen het dagelijks leven van bewoners beïnvloeden, maar ook nieuwe kansen signaleren binnen een sector in transitie. (De methodologie—van participatief ontwerp tot gedeelde besluitvorming—biedt een tegengewicht voor conventionele stadsontwikkeling en is internationaal erkend als een vorm van design activisme.)

Jim & Sofie zullen 10 foto’s meebrengen van het werk van City Mine(d), waarin ze met verschillende lokale gemeenschappen hebben gewerkt rond de energietransitie, zoals in de Brusselse Noord- en Zuidwijken.

Melle Smets
(De Menskrachtcentrale / Huis van de Toekomst)

Melle Smets (1975) studeerde OK5/ Art and Public Space aan de ArtEz Academie in Arnhem. Binnen deze traditie van het omzetten van ruimtelijk ontwerp in een kunstvorm, ontwerpt Smets prototypes voor de openbare ruimte om een ​​nieuwe kijk op onze leefomgeving teweeg te brengen en een brede deelname aan het vormgeven van onze gedeelde ruimte te stimuleren.

Melle komt spreken over ‘De menskrachtcentrale (2050)’, een online tentoonstelling voor Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen die je meeneemt naar de Rotterdamse wijk Bospolder-Tussendijken (BoTu) in 2050 en een speculatief scenario verbeeldt waarin bewoners hun eigen energie opwekken voor alles wat ze nodig hebben. Melle heeft dit als kunstenaar-activist zelf ook in de praktijk gebracht via het Huis van de Toekomst in Rotterdam.

Dalila Ghodbane
(perspective.brussels)

Dalila Ghodbane has conducted research related to domestic construction practices in Brussels (VUB) and in Cairo (CEDEJ/USI Mendrisio). She is an architect and urban planner. Her research interest lies at the intersection of architecture and social sciences, which allows her to approach urban development from the perspective of lived experience. In 2022, she joined the Brussels planning office perspective.brussels to manage the observatory of productive activities.

We have invited Dalila to talk about "Lost in Translation", a research project exploring the everyday reality of home renovations in Brussels. This ethno-architectural inquiry delves into amateur building practices, contrasting them against the "good practices" advocated in architectural discourse and institutional settings.

Annelies De Nijs
(Atelier Horizon)

Annelies De Nijs is opgeleid als architect-ingenieur aan de KULeuven in België, waar ze ook haar studies afrondde met de MaHS en MaUSP diploma’s (Master of Human Settlements; Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning). Na enkele jaren ontwerpend onderzoek te hebben gedaan bij de OSA Research Group on Urbanism and Architecture met een focus op Vietnam en Zanzibar, vervoegde Annelies in 2013 landschaps- en stedenbouwkundig bureau Agence Ter in Parijs. Ze werkte voornamelijk aan territoriale visies en strategische onderzoeken op het raakvlak tussen landschapsontwikkeling en stedenbouw. In 2019 startte ze haar eigen ontwerpbureau Atelier Horizon in Brussel. De projecten variëren tussen territoriale visies, stedelijk en landschapsontwerp en ontwerp van publieke ruimtes. Ze combineert deze ontwerppraktijk met lesgeven aan KULeuven en KASK en heeft ook expertposities bij het Stadsatelier Oostende, de Expertengroep van de Vlaams Bouwmeester en het Scientific Committee van Europan.

Annelies komt het onderzoek van Atelier Horizon rond Klimaatwijken voorstellen, met cases in Kortrijk en Mechelen.

Eva Pfannes
(OOZE)

Eva is a passionate practioner and loves working in complex and fast developing environments with public sector and cultural clients, focused on the benefits for society and the natural environment. She co-founded OOZE architects and urbanists with her partner Sylvain Hartenberg in Rotterdam. OOZE specializes in strategic and holistic systems thinking on urban and neighbourhood scale, as well as bankable concept developments that mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts. For WATER AS LEVERAGE, Eva is the team lead for the CITY OF 1000 TANKS project in Chennai, developing a water balance model across the city to make the most inclusive, efficient and economic use of water locally. As lead designer and co-curator for the IABR 2020/2021, Eva and her team developed the LEAP, an integrated, localized energy transition model for the Bospolder-Tussendijken neighbourhood, emphasizing community ownership, multi-scalar benefits, and practical implementation and design strategies.

We invited Eva to share from these last experiences as co-curator of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam and the project of the Dakparkschool in Rotterdam as an incubator for a wider energy transition.

Ksenia Litvinenko
(Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space)

Ksenia Litvinenko is a historian of the built environment specializing in Soviet architecture and urbanism. She received her PhD in Architecture from the University of Manchester in 2023 and is currently a Walter Benjamin Postdoctoral Fellow at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space in Erkner, Germany.

We invited Ksenia to explore the critical history of human acclimatization and climate-responsive architecture in the Soviet North during the late decades of the Cold War, a period of intensified fossil fuel extraction in Western Siberia. She will examine how the ethnicized concept of thermal comfort in the region developed in parallel with—and in service of—the ambitions of the fossil fuel industry and its labour force.

Ruben Janssens
(51N4E)

Ruben Janssens (°1992) studeerde eerste aan de UHasselt en daarna aan de KULeuven waar hij in 2014 de Master of Architecture (2014) behaalde en nadien bijkomend de Master of Human Settlements (20@15). Sinds 2015 werkt hij voor 51N4E in Brussel, opeenvolgend als stagiair, medewerker en project-architect. De laatste jaren stond hij als projectleider in voor de realisatie van projecten zoals de heraanleg van de Grote Markt in Tienen, het nieuwe huis voor Jester vzw op de C-mine site in Genk, en de renovatie van gebouw 9 op de Peterbos-site in Anderlecht (Brussel). Momenteel volgt hij een veelheid aan projecten op met een focus op de technische uitwerking en uitvoering – waaronder de lopende werven van Bougie (sociale huisvesting, Anderlecht) en CNTR Halle (kantoren, Halle), beide renovatieprojecten op verschillende schaal.

We nodigen Ruben uit vanuit het ontwerp en de werfervaring van het Peterbosproject in Anderlecht dat 51N4E uitvoerde met Lacaton & Vassal.

Tijl Vanmeirhaeghe
(Havana architectuur)

Tijl Vanmeirhaeghe (Gent, 1976) is een Belgisch architect-ingenieur (UGent, 1999) en voormalig docent. Hij werd in 2000 bekroond met de Young Belgian Designer Award en richtte kort daarna samen met Carl Bourgeois BARAK architecten op (2004-2011). Sinds 2012 leidt hij samen met Bert Haerynck en Lies Quatanne het bureau Havana architectuur. Het bureau richt zich voornamelijk op publieke programma's en collectieve huisvesting en won verschillende architectuurprijzen. Vanmeirhaeghe was 15 jaar universitair hoofddocent architectuurwetenschappen en design aan de Universiteit Gent, vakgroep Architectuur en Stedenbouw. ​​Hij doceerde aan verschillende Europese architectuurscholen (Bartlett London, EPFL Lausanne, ETH Zürich, TH Aachen,…) en leverde bijdragen aan verschillende nationale en internationale publicaties over architectuur.

We nodigen Tijl uit vanuit het ontwerp voor onze toekomstige architectuurfaculteit in T4 en het comfortregime die hij daar met het consortium voor heeft ontwikkeld.

Bernardo Robles Hildago & Maria Anita Palumbo

Maria Anita Palumbo (1981) PhD in social anthropology and ethnology at EHESS, She is an Associate Professor (Tenure) in Human and Social Sciences at Lille School of Architecture and Landscape. She specializes in the relationship between city and alterity. Her field of inquiry are urban situations at the margins. Her research also questions the processes of urban transformation observed through ethnographic work. Between 2012 an 2018, she conducted research with the architect Olivier Boucheron titled 'In-between slabs: the 'infraordinary' of modernity' a global ethnography of the transformation of large collective housing projects by their dwellers, resulting in the book « L’entre-deux barres, Une ethnographie de la transformation des ensembles de logements collectifs par leurs habitants », Saint-Etienne : PUSE, 2023 p. 772

Bernardo Robles Hidalgo (1984) studied architecture (ENSAPB) and project management for construction (Brighton University). In Belgium, after working as an illustrator and dismantler for Rotor,  he collaborates with different organisations (Toestand and La Rue) as a coordinator, project assistant and chief janitor officer analyzing users, uses and materialities of public spaces in Brussels in order to design and maintain transitional spaces in anticipation of future project developments. He is a painter and illustrator; his work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (London) and Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam) amongst others.  Presently developing a parental project with Marianita Palumbo at BOSCH (co-housing and shared domestic/community space in Brussels).

Sofie Devriendt & Thomas Montulet

Sofie Devriendt studeerde in 2012 af als Burgerlijk Ingenieur Architect aan de Universiteit Gent. Sindsdien werkt ze als architect en sinds 2016 bij het Brusselse architectenbureau AgwA, waar ze voornamelijk heeft gewerkt aan publieke projecten met een focus op hergebruik. Sofie is sinds 2021 onderwijsassistent aan de Faculteit Architectuur ULB La Cambre-Horta in Brussel.

Thomas Montulet, geboren in 1990 in Eindhoven, Nederland, is burgerlijk ingenieur-architect (UGent, TUM München), woont en werkt in Brussel, België. Hij werkt samen met AgwA en is doctoraatsstudent en ontwerpdocent aan de UCLouvain. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op funeraire architectuur, schaalmodellen en ruïnes en slaat een brug tussen architectuurtheorie en -praktijk. De architectuurprojecten van Memoria Sobreviviente en El Salvador de la Posguerra (https://www.elsalvadormemory.org/) maken deel uit van zijn onderzoek.

We nodigen Sofie en Thomas uit om te getuigen vanuit de Woning Verbiest en de studie rond Scandinaviëblokken in Gent die ze bij Agwa uitvoerden.
